Karmic Debt Numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19: How to Calculate Them
Karmic debt step by step: the numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19, how to find them in your birth date and name, and what each one means.
Also called: Testing Number (Matthew Goodwin) and Warning Number (Matthew Goodwin)
Karmic debt is the numerology term for the numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19 when they appear along the way while you calculate one of your core numbers — before you reduce it to a single digit. Polish schools of numerology add 26. You may also see them called karmic numbers. The name sounds ominous, but in practice it describes an area where things come harder to you and take more work than for others. It is not a punishment or a prediction.
TL;DR: Karmic debts are 13, 14, 16 and 19 (26 in the Polish school) showing up in the calculation of your Life Path, Birthday Number, Expression Number, Soul Urge Number or Personality Number. Each has its own theme: 13 — work and order, 14 — freedom and moderation, 16 — relationships and ego, 19 — independence and accepting help, 26 — body and family. The calculator marks such a number with a “Karma” label.
What Is Karmic Debt?
You reduce each core number to a single digit (or the master numbers 11, 22, 33). Along the way a two-digit number often appears, for example 49 → 13 → 4. If that intermediate number is 13, 14, 16 or 19, numerology speaks of karmic debt: the result is still the final digit (4 here), but with an added theme, written as 13/4.
The name comes from a tradition that linked these numbers to “unfinished business”. At Numato we treat them practically: a karmic debt shows the area where a repeated mistake is easy to make and where honest, steady work pays off most. It does not decide anything — it describes a tendency you can work with.
Karmic Debt Numbers 13, 14, 16, 19 and 26 at a Glance
Each karmic number reduces to a different digit and adds its own theme to it:
| Number | Result | Theme | Typical difficulty | What helps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karmic Debt 13 | 13 → 4 | Work and order | chaos, starting over, looking for shortcuts | a plan, finishing tasks, steady routine |
| Karmic Debt 14 | 14 → 5 | Freedom and moderation | lack of moderation, impulsive decisions, addictions | fixed rules, limits, decisions made calmly |
| Karmic Debt 16 | 16 → 7 | Relationships and ego | sudden change, collapse of what was built on appearances | humility, honesty, building on facts |
| Karmic Debt 19 | 19 → 10 → 1 | Independence and power | controlling everything, trouble accepting help | asking for help, partnership, sharing credit |
| Karmic Debt 26 | 26 → 8 | Body and family (Polish school only) | self-sacrifice at the cost of health, family tension | looking after your health, assertiveness, supporting instead of doing everything |
Only Polish schools of numerology (e.g. O. N. Stępińska) count 26 as a debt. Hans Decoz and most English, German and Italian sources stop at 13, 14, 16 and 19 — and that is how the Numato calculator counts by default.
How to Calculate Karmic Debt Step by Step
- Calculate the five core numbers: your Life Path and Birthday Number from your birth date, and your Expression Number, Soul Urge Number and Personality Number from your full birth name.
- For each one, write down the intermediate results before you reach a digit from 1 to 9 (or a master number).
- If 13, 14, 16 or 19 (in the Polish school also 26) appears along the way, that number carries a karmic debt.
Example From a Birth Date
For May 4, 2003 you reduce the day, month and year separately: 4, 5 and 2 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 5 . The sum 4 + 5 + 5 = 14 → 5 . So the Life Path is 14/5, with karmic debt 14. The Birthday Number comes from the day alone: anyone born on the 13th, 14th, 16th or 19th of a month has a debt in that number (the 26th only in the Polish school).
Example From a Name
You turn letters into digits using the numerology alphabet; accented letters count as their base letter. MARIA MAZUR: the letters M, A, R, I, A give 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 24 , and M, A, Z, U, R give 4 + 1 + 8 + 3 + 9 = 25 . Together 24 + 25 = 49 → 13 → 4 : the Expression Number is 13/4, with karmic debt 13. JAN NOWAK, on the other hand, gives 7 + 19 = 26 → 8 — a karmic debt 26 only in the Polish school.
Why Do Different Calculators Show Different Debts?
A karmic debt depends on the intermediate number, and that depends on how the date is added up. For May 15, 1949 the component method (day, month and year separately) gives 6 + 5 + 5 = 16 → 7 , so a debt 16. If you add all the digits in one row, 1 + 5 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 9 = 34 → 7 — the same Life Path, but no debt. Details and statistics are in why numerology calculators give different results.

Where the Numato Calculator Shows Karmic Debts
Enter your full name and birth date in the Numato numerology calculator. Every number with a debt gets a “Karma” label, and next to it you see the whole reduction path, for example 49 → 13 → 4.
By default the calculator follows the “Hans Decoz (Pythagorean)” school: it marks the debts 13, 14, 16 and 19 in the core numbers and in the cycles (for example your Personal Year). In a cycle, the debt describes the influence of that period, not a lifelong trait. In the calculation settings you can choose the “Polish school” or change single fields: “Karmic debts” (13, 14, 16, 19 or 13, 14, 16, 19 and 26) and where the debt is marked (core numbers only, core and cycles, or every number).
Karmic Debt vs. Karmic Lesson vs. Karmic Tail
- Karmic debt: the number 13, 14, 16 or 19 (in the Polish school also 26) on the way to one of your core numbers.
- Karmic lesson: a digit from 1 to 9 missing from the letters of your full name — explained in karmic lessons.
- Karmic tail: a Destiny Matrix concept: three arcana from your birth date, calculated separately — see karmic tail.
- Karmic relationship: a reading of two people’s relationship based on their numbers, including both partners’ debts — see karmic relationship.
What to Do If You Have a Karmic Debt
A debt in the Life Path says the most, because it concerns your whole life. In the Soul Urge Number it concerns what you want, in the Expression Number how you act, in the Personality Number how others see you, and in a cycle only that period. In practice:
- 13: plan the task, split it into stages and finish each stage before starting the next;
- 14: set fixed rules (budget, hours, limits) and sleep on important decisions;
- 16: in relationships, talk openly about facts, and after a setback rebuild on what has proven true;
- 19: ask for help before it is too late and share credit with others;
- 26: treat your health as a duty, and help the people close to you without doing everything for them.
You will find the details of each number in the articles on karmic debts 13, 14, 16, 19 and 26 linked in the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is karmic debt bad?
No. A karmic debt is not a verdict but a sign that in one area a repeated mistake is easier to make and more steady work is needed. Many people have at least one debt in their numbers.
Can you have more than one karmic debt?
Yes. Each of the five core numbers is checked separately, so a debt can appear, for example, in both your Life Path and your Expression Number. The calculator marks each of them with a “Karma” label.
Does changing your name remove a karmic debt?
No. In numerology, debts from the name are calculated from the full name on your birth certificate. A new first name or surname, for example after marriage, adds its own numbers but does not erase the ones from birth, and it does not change debts from the birth date at all.
Is 26 a karmic debt?
Only in the Polish numerology tradition. By default the Numato calculator follows Hans Decoz and marks 13, 14, 16 and 19; it shows debt 26 once you choose the “Polish school” or the “13, 14, 16, 19 and 26” set in the calculation settings.
Is a karmic number the same as a karmic debt?
Yes, in substance. “Karmic number” is a common name online, while “karmic debt” is the term used in Pythagorean numerology and by Numato. Both refer to 13, 14, 16 and 19 when they appear while reducing a core number. Do not confuse them with karmic lessons, which are the digits missing from your name.
How can I check my karmic debt for free?
Enter your full name and birth date in the Numato numerology calculator. Every number with a karmic debt gets a “Karma” label, and the reduction path shows which karmic number it passes through.
Karmic debt is only one part of your profile. How it combines with the rest of your numbers and cycles is described in the numerology profile calculated from your own data.
