The 22 Arcana in the Destiny Matrix: Every Meaning
The meaning of all 22 arcana in the Destiny Matrix, from The Magician (1) to The Fool (22): light and shadow sides and how to read them in A–E.
Every point of the Destiny Matrix is one of the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot, from The Magician (1) to The Fool (22). The arcanum describes a kind of energy, and its place on the chart describes the area of life in which that energy works. Below you will find the meaning of all 22 arcana in their light and shadow forms, plus pointers on how to read them in your personality, in work and money, in relationships and in the karmic tail.
TL;DR: The matrix has exactly 22 arcana in the Marseille numbering: 8 is Justice, 11 is Strength and 22 is The Fool. No arcanum is “good” or “bad” — each has a light side and a shadow side, and its meaning depends on its place on the chart. Numbers such as 11, 13, 19 or 22 are arcana numbers here, not master numbers or karmic debts.
How to read an arcanum in the Destiny Matrix
An arcanum in the matrix is not a card drawn from a deck but a number calculated from your date of birth — which is why it describes rather than predicts. Ask three questions about every arcanum. First: what is this energy like in its light form? Second: what does it look like when it slips into shadow, as excess or lack? Third: where does it stand — in the personality (A), the talents (B), the material task (C) and the money line, the karmic task (D) and the tail, or on the age scale?
The same arcanum in the personality point describes a way of being, in the material task a working style, and in the karmic tail a pattern that, according to the system, may repeat. We describe the meaning of each position in our guide on how to read a Destiny Matrix, and the arithmetic in our article on how to calculate the Destiny Matrix. You can see your own arcana in the Destiny Matrix calculator: every point of the result shows its number and name.
The Marseille numbering: why 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength
The matrix uses the numbering of the Tarot de Marseille. In the Rider–Waite deck, published in 1909, two arcana swapped places: there 8 is Strength and 11 is Justice. So if you read about “arcanum 8” in a Rider–Waite book, you may find a description of a different card than the one in the matrix.
The second difference concerns The Fool. In the classic tarot this card has no number or carries a zero. The matrix works with sums, and zero cannot be a point on the chart, so The Fool closes the cycle as arcanum 22. Some calculators write it as 0, though — which changes every sum it is part of and makes the results disagree with the calculator of the method's own school.

Arcana 1–7: from The Magician to The Chariot
Arcanum 1 — The Magician
Keywords: will, initiative, skill.
The Magician is the energy of beginnings and agency: an idea turns into action once you take matters into your own hands. In its light form it brings initiative, quick learning, skill with words and tools, and the courage to go first. In its shadow the same energy can scatter into many starts without a finish, or into manipulating with words, when you say one thing and do another.
In the personality (A), The Magician may describe someone who likes to initiate and persuade. In the material task or on the money line it points to work in which you create, sell ideas or communicate. In point D or the karmic tail the lesson is often keeping your words and actions consistent and seeing things through.
Arcanum 2 — The High Priestess
Keywords: intuition, hidden knowledge, silence.
The High Priestess is intuition, knowledge gained in silence and the ability to listen to yourself. At its fullest it is wisdom that needs no audience: a feel for people and situations, patience in exploring a subject, discretion. When this energy is missing or overdone, passivity, waiting instead of acting and hiding behind mystery come easily.
In the talents (B), The High Priestess may mean a gift for intuition, study and analysis. At work it favors tasks that require knowledge, confidentiality and careful listening — research, counseling, working with texts. In the karmic task the lesson is often trusting your inner voice and having the courage to say out loud what you know.
Arcanum 3 — The Empress
Keywords: femininity, abundance, care.
The Empress is abundance, care and the joy of creating — from relationships to home and body. In balance it gives a sense that there is plenty to share: warmth, hospitality, an eye for beauty and a talent for creating spaces where others feel good. Its harder side is overprotectiveness, controlling loved ones through care, or losing yourself in pleasure and spending.
On the love line, The Empress may describe a need for closeness and nurturing. In work and money it favors occupations linked to beauty, comfort, care and creativity. In point D the lesson is often giving without holding others too close.
Arcanum 4 — The Emperor
Keywords: structure, responsibility, leadership.
The Emperor is structure, responsibility and readiness to lead. In its light form it builds order that serves others: it plans, organizes, takes decisions and keeps its word. In excess it can turn into rigidity and a need for control, in deficit into avoiding decisions and expecting someone else to set the rules.
In the personality, The Emperor may bring natural authority. In the material task it points to leading people, management or running your own business. In the karmic tail the lesson is often the difference between responsibility and control.
Arcanum 5 — The Hierophant
Keywords: tradition, teaching, values.
The Hierophant is tradition, values and passing on knowledge — the role of teacher and student at once. In its mature form it helps you find your own beliefs and share them without imposing them. When this energy hardens into dogma, it closes you off to other views and turns experience into moralizing.
In the talents, The Hierophant may describe a gift for teaching and mentoring. At work it favors education, advisory roles and professions built on principles. In relationships it emphasizes shared values and lasting commitment; in point D the lesson is often openness to people who think differently.
Arcanum 6 — The Lovers
Keywords: choice, relationships, harmony.
The Lovers is choice and relationships: what and whom you choose with your heart. In its light form it brings the ability to build close, equal bonds and the courage to choose in line with your own values. The difficulty can be indecision, living by other people's expectations or depending on their approval.
On the love line or in its middle, The Lovers puts relationships at the center of life. At work it favors roles with people and partnerships. In the karmic tail the lesson is often making decisions on your own rather than to please someone.
Arcanum 7 — The Chariot
Keywords: direction, movement, determination.
The Chariot is movement, purpose and determination — energy that pushes you forward and to new places. With a clear direction it helps you steadily get where you are going despite obstacles. Without direction it scatters into haste, change for its own sake and rivalry that leads nowhere.
In the personality, The Chariot may describe someone dynamic and ambitious. At work it favors jobs on the move, travel, sport or logistics. In the karmic task the lesson is often setting your goal before you set off.

Arcana 8–14: from Justice to Temperance
Arcanum 8 — Justice
Keywords: balance, fairness, cause and effect.
Justice is balance, honesty and the awareness that decisions have consequences. In its light it brings the calm that comes from acting by your principles, a sense of fairness and the ability to weigh arguments. In its shadow it can mean harsh judgment of yourself and others, or sticking to the letter of a rule instead of its spirit.
In the material task, Justice may point to work with law, documents, finance or settling disputes. In relationships it emphasizes the need for fair arrangements. In the karmic tail the lesson is often taking responsibility for the consequences of your own decisions. Remember that in the Rider–Waite numbering, 8 is a different card.
Arcanum 9 — The Hermit
Keywords: solitude, wisdom, search.
The Hermit is wisdom gained in solitude and the need to search for meaning. In balance it makes you a guide who shares what you have discovered: an expert, a mentor, someone who sees deeper. When it turns into isolation, it cuts you off from people and shuts you inside your own thoughts.
On the money line, The Hermit may point to work that calls for focus, knowledge and independence. On the love line, a need for space and deep conversation rather than an intense social life. In point D the lesson is often reaching out to people with what you know.
Arcanum 10 — Wheel of Fortune
Keywords: change, cycles, chance.
Wheel of Fortune is cycles, change and making the most of opportunities. In its light form it gives a sense of timing, flexibility and ease in catching chances that appear only for a moment. The biggest difficulty is often resisting change, or believing that everything depends on luck rather than on your decisions.
In the material task, Wheel of Fortune may favor work with several sources of income, trade and projects with a changing rhythm. In point D and at the end of the tail the lesson is often trusting the rhythm of ups and downs. On the age scale this arcanum is often read as a period of change.
Arcanum 11 — Strength
Keywords: inner strength, energy, courage.
Strength is inner strength, courage and energy that can carry a lot. In its mature form it is strength that needs no force: perseverance, mastery over emotions and gentleness in action. Without gentleness it turns into stubbornness, rivalry or exhaustion when you take on more than you need to.
In the center of the matrix, Strength may mean a core built on strength of character. At work it favors tasks that demand perseverance and a lot of energy. The number 11 is an arcanum number here, not a master number — its meaning in Pythagorean numerology is covered in a separate article on master number 11.
Arcanum 12 — The Hanged Man
Keywords: pause, new perspective, sacrifice.
The Hanged Man is a pause and a view from another angle — time that seems to bring nothing yet changes how you see things. In its light form it brings original thinking, empathy and a readiness to serve others. The difficulty can be feeling like a victim, feeling stuck, or sacrificing yourself without limits.
In the talents, The Hanged Man may describe creativity that comes from an unusual point of view. At work it favors helping and creative professions. In the karmic tail the lesson is often letting go by choice of what cannot be changed, instead of staying in the victim role.
Arcanum 13 — Death
Keywords: transformation, end of a stage, renewal.
In the tarot, Death is not about the end of life but about transformation: closing chapters to make room for new ones. In its light form it gives the courage to end relationships, projects and habits that have run their course, and the ability to start again. The difficulty can be clinging to what has passed, or tearing things down without thought.
In the material task, Death may favor work with crises, change and restructuring. In point D the lesson is often the courage to let things end. In the matrix 13 is not a karmic debt — that term belongs to Pythagorean numerology and is covered in our article on Karmic Debt 13.
Arcanum 14 — Temperance
Keywords: moderation, balance, blending.
Temperance is moderation, patience and blending opposites into a coherent whole. In its light it brings a calm that eases tension in relationships, a sense of proportion and a talent for reconciling sides. In its shadow it can mean lukewarmness, a lack of clear opinions, or avoiding conflict at any cost.
At work, Temperance may favor mediation, supporting people and tasks that require patience. On the love line it describes a need for harmony. In the karmic tail the lesson is often finding the middle way between extremes — including in the pace of life.
Arcana 15–22: from The Devil to The Fool
Arcanum 15 — The Devil
Keywords: temptation, attachment, desire.
The Devil is desire, attachment and magnetism — including money and pleasure. In the matrix it is not a “bad” arcanum: in its light form it brings charisma, ambition, a head for business and the courage to go after what you want. The difficulty can be dependence, giving in to temptation, and attaching yourself to people or things more strongly than serves you.
On the money line, The Devil may point to strong earning potential in business and sales — as a possibility, not a promise. On the love line, passion. In the karmic tail the lesson is often using this energy consciously instead of letting it lead you.
Arcanum 16 — The Tower
Keywords: breakthrough, upheaval, release.
The Tower is a breakthrough: a sudden change that knocks down what was not stable. It can be hard when you cling to old structures, but when you do not fight it, it frees you and makes room for truer foundations. In its light form it gives the courage to start again and the ability to build on firmer ground.
In the material task, The Tower may favor work around major change, building and rebuilding. In point D the lesson is often humility towards what cannot be controlled. The number 16 does not mean a karmic debt here, only the arcanum of breakthrough.
Arcanum 17 — The Star
Keywords: hope, inspiration, talent.
The Star is hope, inspiration and a talent that wants to be seen. In its light form it brings a creative spark, faith in the future and the ability to inspire others by example. The difficulty can be waiting for other people's admiration, feeling undervalued, or living with your head in the clouds without acting.
In the talents and at work, The Star may favor creative and public roles: art, design, performing, content creation. In the karmic tail the lesson is often sharing what is beautiful in you instead of hiding your talent in a drawer.
Arcanum 18 — The Moon
Keywords: imagination, intuition, uncertainty.
The Moon is imagination, intuition and the world of dreams, but also fears and uncertainty. In balance it gives sensitivity, deep intuition and creativity that draws on the subconscious. When this energy dominates, illusions, unease and reading the world through your worries rather than through facts come easily.
In the talents, The Moon may describe an artistic imagination and a feel for moods. At work it favors creative roles and those where empathy matters. In the karmic tail the lesson is often checking your worries against reality before they start steering your decisions.
Arcanum 19 — The Sun
Keywords: joy, clarity, vitality.
The Sun is joy, clarity and vital energy that draws people in. In its light it brings warmth and optimism that give strength to others too, along with self-confidence and natural visibility. In excess it can become a need to be the center of attention, dominating the conversation, or difficulty accepting someone else's success.
In the material task, The Sun may point to work in which you are visible and give others energy — with people, on stage, as a team leader. In the matrix 19 is not a karmic debt, only the arcanum of clarity and joy.
Arcanum 20 — Judgement
Keywords: awakening, lineage, renewal.
Judgement is awakening, family line and renewal: what you receive from your ancestors and what you do with it. In its light form it brings a sense of roots, gratitude towards your family and the ability to make a fresh start on that foundation. The difficulty can be judging your loved ones and carrying family patterns that nobody has named.
In the ancestral square and the purposes, Judgement brings the theme of the family line especially to the fore. At work it may favor roles involving history, memory and family. In the karmic tail the lesson is often making peace with the past.
Arcanum 21 — The World
Keywords: wholeness, fulfillment, openness to the world.
The World is wholeness, fulfillment and openness to people from different places and cultures. At its fullest it brings a sense of being part of something bigger, curiosity about the world and ease in new environments. The difficulty can be scattering yourself, constantly looking for fulfillment somewhere else, or fear of stepping beyond the familiar.
At work, The World may favor international roles, travel and projects that bring different worlds together. At the start of the karmic tail — as in the tail 21–4–10 — the system links it with the theme of freedom and boundaries.
Arcanum 22 — The Fool
Keywords: freedom, spontaneity, fresh start.
The Fool is freedom, spontaneity and the courage of a new beginning. In its light it brings lightness, trust in life and a fresh perspective that lets you start without baggage. In its shadow it can mean carelessness without responsibility, avoiding commitments, or running away when things get hard.
At work, The Fool may favor creative, flexible and innovative roles. In the matrix 22 is the last arcanum and is not reduced any further, but it is not a master number — its meaning in Pythagorean numerology is covered in our article on master number 22.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an arcanum 33 in the Destiny Matrix?
No. The Destiny Matrix has exactly 22 arcana, and any number above 22 is replaced by the sum of its digits — 33 would become 6, The Lovers. The number 33 belongs to Pythagorean numerology, where it is a master number. If you see “arcanum 33” somewhere, it is most likely a mistake or a mix-up of two different systems: the matrix of arcana and the numerology of numbers. In the matrix the highest number is always 22.
You can read about master numbers 11, 22 and 33 in our article on master numbers.
Does arcanum 13 in the matrix mean death?
No. Arcanum 13, Death, symbolizes transformation in the tarot and in the Destiny Matrix: closing chapters, relationships or habits that have run their course to make room for something new. It does not predict death or misfortune, and it is not a karmic debt from Pythagorean numerology either. In its shadow form it means clinging to the past rather than any threat; in its light form, the courage to close what no longer serves you.
Why is 22 The Fool in the matrix and not 0?
In the classic tarot the card The Fool has no number or carries a zero. The Destiny Matrix works with sums, and zero cannot be a point on the chart, so The Fool takes the number 22 and closes the cycle of arcana. Calculators that write it as 0 give different results in every sum that includes it. Numato follows the rule of the method's own school: 22 stays 22, and numbers above 22 become the sum of their digits.
Are 11 and 22 master numbers in the matrix?
No. Master numbers are a concept from Pythagorean numerology, where 11, 22 and 33 are not reduced further. In the Destiny Matrix every number from 1 to 22 is the number of an arcanum: 11 is Strength, and 22 is The Fool. For the same reason 13, 14, 16 and 19 are not karmic debts in the matrix but the arcana Death, Temperance, The Tower and The Sun. Their meaning depends on their place on the chart.
Which arcanum in the matrix is the best?
None of them. Each of the 22 arcana has a light side and a shadow side, and its meaning depends on its place on the chart. The Devil on the money line may describe a head for business, and in the karmic tail a tendency towards dependence; The Sun brings warmth but, in excess, a need to be the center of attention. That is why the matrix is read as a whole, not as a ranking of single numbers.
Are the arcana in the matrix fortune-telling cards?
Not in that sense. The matrix uses the symbolism of the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot, but nothing is drawn: every point is calculated from your date of birth by a fixed rule, so the same date always gives the same matrix. An arcanum here describes an energy and a theme for reflection, not a future event. It is best treated as a tool for getting to know yourself rather than as a prophecy.
