How to Read a Destiny Matrix: Points, Lines and Ages
What points A–E, the ancestral square, purposes, the money and love line, chakra energy and the age scale mean — and where to start reading.
You read a Destiny Matrix in two layers: the arcanum tells you what kind of energy it is, and its place on the chart tells you which area of life it concerns. The same arcanum means one thing in the personality point and another on the money line. In this guide we go through every part of the chart in the order that is easiest to read, and show each one on a single example: the date 15 March 1990.
TL;DR: Start with the center (E), then read the four main points: personality, talents, the material task and the karmic task. Only against that background look at the karmic tail, the money and love line, the purposes and the ancestral square, and finish with the age scale. Every arcanum has a light and a shadow side, so the matrix describes possibilities, not verdicts.
Where to start reading the matrix
The chart has several dozen points, but they do not all carry the same weight. Read the five main points first — they form the core from which everything else is calculated. Only then move on to the lines and areas that follow from them. This order protects you from the most common mistake: drawing conclusions from a single number without the context of the whole matrix.
For each point, ask yourself two questions: what does this energy look like in me in its light form, and when does it slip into shadow? You will find the descriptions of the arcana, with both sides, in our article on the 22 arcana in the Destiny Matrix. If you do not have your chart yet, calculate it in the Destiny Matrix calculator, and if you would like to understand the arithmetic first, see how to calculate the Destiny Matrix.

Main points: personality, talents, tasks and the center
The main points sit at the corners of the upright square and in its middle. Three of them come straight from the date, and two are sums. For 15 March 1990 they are: A 15, B 3, C 19, D 10 and the center 11. Closer to the middle of each ray lie helper points (for example A1, A2 and A3) — in the system they describe deeper layers of the same trait.
Personality (A)
Point A, calculated from the day of birth, describes how you act day to day and how others see you — the first impression you make. In our example it is The Devil: the energy of strong attraction and desire. In its light form it can bring charisma and the courage to go after what you want; in its shadow form, a tendency towards dependence and giving in to temptation. Points A1, A2 and A3 (8, 5 and 19) show what supports this personality from within.
Talents (B)
Point B, from the month of birth, speaks of your talents: what comes easily to you and what you can develop throughout your life. In the example it is The Empress — abundance, care and the joy of creating, a talent for building a welcoming space for yourself and others. The points closer to the center (14, 17 and 7) show, in the system, where these abilities draw their strength from.
Material task (C)
Point C, from the year of birth, is the material task: work, money and everyday matters in which the system sees your main challenge in the material world. In the example it is The Sun — clarity, joy and an energy that draws people in. A reading might go: work in which you can be visible and give others energy, without needing to be the center of attention all the time. This is symbolism, not a financial forecast.
Karmic task (D)
Point D, the sum of A, B and C, is the karmic task — a theme that, according to the system, may keep returning until you deal with it consciously. In the example it is Wheel of Fortune: cycles, change and the ability to make use of opportunities. The lesson may be trusting the rhythm of ups and downs instead of fighting every change. D is also the outer number of the karmic tail.
Karmic tail: D1–D2–D
The tail is the three numbers of the lower ray, read from the center outwards: D1, D2 and D. For 15 March 1990 they are 21–4–10, that is The World, The Emperor and Wheel of Fortune. The system links the tail with recurring patterns — a pointer for your own work, not a verdict. How to calculate it, why dates from 1900 to 2100 produce 26 distinct tails and how often each one occurs is covered in a separate article on the karmic tail.
Center (E)
The center E, the sum of the four main points, ties the whole matrix together. In the system it is its core — the energy around which everything else is arranged, in some descriptions also called the comfort zone: what you return to when you want to feel like yourself. In the example it is Strength — inner strength and courage. It is worth checking whether that strength works gently or turns into stubbornness and exhaustion.
Ancestral square: the father's line and the mother's line
The second, rotated square of the chart is the ancestral square. Its corners lie between the main points and are their sums: top left from A and B, top right from B and C, bottom right from C and D, bottom left from A and D. For 15 March 1990 these are 18, 22, 11 and 7.
- Father's line runs from the top left to the bottom right corner. According to the system, it describes what is passed down on your father's side — patterns and resources. In the example: The Moon and Strength.
- Mother's line runs from the top right to the bottom left corner and describes the same on your mother's side. In the example: The Fool and The Chariot.
- The center of the ancestral square is the sum of the four corners — the common denominator of both family lines. In the example it is 13, Death, which in the tarot stands for transformation and closing chapters, not literal death.
The corners of the ancestral square are also corners of the age scale: top left stands for age 10, top right for 30, bottom right for 50 and bottom left for 70. Read the family lines as questions about which family patterns you want to keep and which you want to change — not as a judgment of your parents.
Calculate your Destiny Matrix
Money and love line
The money and love line lies in the lower right part of the chart, between points C1 and D1. First you calculate its middle — the sum of C1 and D1 — and then its two ends: money as the sum of the middle and C1, love as the sum of the middle and D1. For 15 March 1990 the middle is 6 (The Lovers), and money and love are both 9 (The Hermit).
Money tells you what energy may support earning and handling money. The Hermit in this place can be read as work that calls for focus, knowledge and independence — expert work rather than crowd work. Love shows what energy may help in close relationships and what you look for in them; here the same arcanum suggests a need for space and deep conversation. Middle of the line connects the two: in the system it is the point where work and relationships influence each other.
The money line is the system's symbolism, not a financial forecast or investment advice. It does not say how much you will earn; it only prompts the question of what working style suits you best.
Purposes: personal, social, spiritual and planetary
The purposes are four numbers calculated from other points of the matrix. In the system they describe widening circles of life: from your own path, through your relationships with people and your family line, to a broader sense of meaning.
- Personal — the sum of Sky (B and D) and Earth (A and C). For 15 March 1990 sky is 13, earth 7 and the personal purpose 20, Judgement: awakening and renewal.
- Social — the sum of the father's line and the mother's line from the ancestral square. In the example both lines give 11, and the social purpose is 22, The Fool.
- Spiritual — the sum of the personal and social purposes. In the example 6, The Lovers: choices that match your own values.
- Planetary — the sum of the social and spiritual purposes. In the example 10, Wheel of Fortune.
It helps to read the purposes together with the main points. When the same arcanum repeats — like Wheel of Fortune in point D and in the planetary purpose of our example — the system treats it as a particularly strong theme.
Chakra energy
The chakra energy is purely the system's symbolism, not a diagnosis or medical advice — for health matters, talk to a doctor. The chakra table says nothing about illnesses; it shows how the system assigns arcana to seven areas of body and mind, from the crown of the head to the base of the spine. You can treat it as a prompt to reflect on where you feel tension and where you feel balance.
Each row has three numbers. Physical is the point on the horizontal axis of the chart, Energy the point on the vertical axis, and Emotions their sum. The last row, “Total”, sums the columns. For 15 March 1990 the table looks like this:
| Chakra | Place | Physical | Energy | Emotions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sahasrara | crown | 15 | 3 | 18 |
| Ajna | brow | 5 | 17 | 22 |
| Vishuddha | throat | 8 | 14 | 22 |
| Anahata | heart | 19 | 7 | 8 |
| Manipura | solar plexus | 11 | 11 | 22 |
| Svadhisthana | lower abdomen | 3 | 21 | 6 |
| Muladhara | base of the spine | 19 | 10 | 11 |
| Total | 8 | 11 | 10 |
When the same arcanum appears several times in the emotions column — in the example 22 appears three times — the system reads it as an emotional theme worth noticing. It is still a symbolic description: it does not replace medical tests or a conversation with a specialist.
Age scale: how to find your age on the matrix
The edge of the octagon works as a timeline. Its eight corners stand for successive decades, counted from point A clockwise: A is age 0, the top left corner 10, B 20, the top right corner 30, C 40, the bottom right corner 50, D 60 and the bottom left corner 70. Between each pair of corners lie seven intermediate points, one every 1.25 years, so the full circle covers 80 years.
The intermediate points are calculated by halving the section and adding its two ends, then the quarters and eighths in the same way. For 15 March 1990 the corners are 15, 18, 3, 22, 19, 11, 10 and 7, and the period starting at age 35, for instance, falls on 5, The Hierophant. The calculator marks the point that matches your current age, so you do not have to find it by hand.
An arcanum on the age scale can be read as the backdrop of a period: a theme that may come to the fore in those years. It is not a forecast of events, only a pointer to what deserves your attention.
Example reading: 15 March 1990
Let us put it together. The center is Strength, so the core of the matrix is inner strength — the question is whether it works gently or through pressure. The personality (The Devil) adds magnetism and ambition, the talents (The Empress) care and creativity, and the material task (The Sun) points to work in which you can be visible. The karmic task and a tail ending in Wheel of Fortune suggest a lesson in flexibility towards change.
On the money and love line The Hermit appears twice, which can be read as a need for independence at work and depth in relationships. The personal purpose (Judgement) speaks of renewal, and Wheel of Fortune repeated in the planetary purpose strengthens the theme of cycles. A reading like this is a starting point for questions, not a finished character profile — only your own experience will show what really fits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which point should you start with when reading a Destiny Matrix?
It is best to start with the center (E), because in the system it is the core of the whole matrix, and then move to the four main points: personality (A), talents (B), the material task (C) and the karmic task (D). Only against that background should you look at the karmic tail, the money and love line, the purposes and the ancestral square. Leave the age scale for last: it describes life periods, not character.
What does it mean when the same arcanum appears in several places?
A repetition usually strengthens that arcanum's theme. If the same number stands, for example, in point D and in the planetary purpose, the system treats its energy as especially prominent in your life, in both its light and its shadow form. Each time, though, read it through the lens of its position: the same arcanum means one thing in the personality point and quite another on the money line or in the karmic tail.
Does the money line tell me how much I will earn?
No. The money line in the Destiny Matrix is the system's symbolism, not a financial forecast. The arcanum in that place rather suggests which working style and which approach to money may suit you — for example, independent or team work, creative or structured. Your income depends on your choices, your skills and the market. Financial decisions call for reliable information and, where needed, the advice of a qualified professional rather than a chart.
Does the chakra energy in the matrix point to health problems?
No. The chakra energy is a purely symbolic element of the system: it assigns arcana to seven traditional areas, from the crown of the head to the base of the spine, but it says nothing about your state of health. You can treat it as an invitation to reflect on where you feel tension and where you feel calm. If something about your health worries you, always make decisions with a doctor, not on the basis of the matrix.
How do I find my current age on the age scale?
Count from point A, which stands for birth, clockwise: each corner of the octagon adds ten years, and between the corners there are seven points every 1.25 years. For example, age 35 falls halfway between the corner for 30 and point C, which stands for 40. The Numato calculator marks this point automatically, so you do not need to work it out by hand.
